What happens to our opinions?

Sun Dec 20, 2009 1:47 PM EST

You know, I was wondering, what happens to our opinions?
Here on the vine, membership is free. You come; you meet people of all faiths and philosophy with
very nice, funny, or scary screen names. Some people here are friendly and some are hostile. You may scoop yourself a list of friends and wed your thoughts to theirs. Although you can't see them, but like God, they are real. Then there is an "All-you-can-read buffet" of a variety of articles of all categories that is offered to your intellect to relish. You may choose the ones of interest to you; you read and comment. Or if you don't like what is served, you may even cook your own article and serve it hot. Chances are that members may find it delicious and devour it with appetite in agreement or arguments. Next you may feel fulfilled. By the same token, you may log on excited and log off irritated, for your opinions was not valued or a troll ate them raw; or you walk out with a warning, a suspension, or a banishment from participation due to your behavior. It's all part of being here. Regardless of what happens, the excitement of being on the vine is real and your contribution is worthy and somehow counts.

But is that what being on the vine all about? Make friends and enemies; write and/or seed articles, read and comment? But what's in it for the News vine comity? What is their interest in providing a free site where people give their opinions and publish articles free of charge when they (the comity) have, I'm sure, expenditure to keep the site operative? They say nothing is free in life. Are our opinions the fee? We know when we go to the toilet whatever we left there is for the toilet to dispose of as good fits; and we couldn't care less of the fate of it. Is it the same for our precious thoughts and opinions we left on the vine? Are they like drops of water cast in the ocean that are irretrievable and lost forever? Or are they being collected and compiled to achieve whatever? Well since it has occurred to me to think of it, I don't know for you folks, but I was only wondering, what happens to our opinions after we lay them on the vine?

I hear this voice in my head:

"Like sands through the hourglass, so are the opinions of our lives"

Dowser

The more I read of other viewpoints, and logical discussions, the more my opinions 'grow'. They really don't change all that much, but they grow in understanding, so that I become more nuanced.

This describes it, sort of-- I have a definite opinion about health care. In reading some of the posts of the logical, reasonable people on NV, my opinion has not changed, but I can at least understand other people's viewpoint. I may not agree, but I can see where they are coming from, so that my opinion is more open to accepting others. Does that make sense?

In some cases, I have changed my opinion-- not 180o, but at least 90o.

Listening to others, I have grown as a person, and am grateful for the opportunity to do so.

I see your point Dowser, very well thought out based on the context you approach the topic. But I was more inquiring whether our opinions and thoughts are not being used to carry out profitable transaction which we turn over in exchange for free membership. Thanks for honoring my thread.

Please forgive me for misunderstanding! Yes, I agree that our posts are, in general, used for profit. But I never click on the advertisements... Can't be bothered with all that.

Sorry, dear Truth! Hope you have a great day!

Truth be Told, You've done it again! This a very good question. I have wondered about such things myself.

Dowser, I think you made a good point,

my opinion has not changed, but I can at least understand other people's viewpoint. I may not agree, but I can see where they are coming from, so that my opinion is more open to accepting others. Does that make sense?

In relation to how "they" benefit from our opinions or what worth they are, it seems our motives for being here, may be an asset to profit margins.

What ever their benefit or wherever our opinions go, it is evidentally good business that we are so anxious to express ourselves.

Whether it is a business ploy, for their benefit, to collect our opinions, which we so freely give, it is a pretty good deal, for us, as well. They actually pay us to be here on their site.

Not that I becoming wealthy from my stint here. But in conjunction with what Dowser said, we benefit in many ways.

I am interested in what others have to say about this. Good post!

Knowledge is the gift of sharing your thoughts with others of good will or not.

Ideas freely shared enrich us all; although it may be at different levels or acceptance.

As for the costs: The pecuniary are addressed by the advertising.

And as for the personal costs: the cost of isolation, self-imposed or otherwise, surely exceeds the occasional rejection in the Vineyard.

The rewards of sharpening our verbal skills to express a concept are immeasurable.

Please note the advertisements at the top of the page, and inlaid into your article ;)

Newsvine (and MSNBC, who owns Newsvine) profits from the adverts posted on each page throughout the site. The more viners click a particular article and view these ads (or better yet, click these ads), the more revenue they earn. That's how they keep it free for all of us to debate the big stories of the day.

As for Viners like you and me, our opinions are worth something to the people who agree with us, and to some different extent, they're important to those we disagree with (after all, a debate where all parties agree is just a conversation). Really, our opinions are of tremendous value to the spirit of democracy. We, the informed public, debate these topics and our opinions fuel positive change. At least I hope that's how democracy works. We debate, we vote, we rule. And Viners tend to rule in a different sense, too... we're just awesome!

I value your feedback. I never actually paid much attention to the ads at the tops of the page, for I was more interested in penetrating the seeded article. I wonder how many people really notice those ads and/or actually make use of them. I thank you for alerting me on that and for stopping by. Peace.

There are ads all over the Vine. The more Vinites there are, the more that can be charged to advertise on the Vine. You're right. There is no free lunch.

As far as my own opinions go, it depends on who enters the conversation. Much like real life in that regard. If most agree, my opinion solidifies. If there is well articulated thought expressed that contradicts my opinion, that opinion may evolve and change. If thoughts that I agree with are countered with vitriolic, mindless yammering, not only does my opinion solidify, my opinion of the nay-sayer goes down as well.

My opinions have changed on some things. Softened a bit but never turned around completely. But coming to the vine my opinions are made on a more educated basis.

My take on your question was more along the lines of BIG BROTHER watching us and compiling info. CIA, FBI, Homeland Security to name a few.

There are so many ways to watch you. Every time you use your charge card a little more information is gained. When you use your store card at the grocery store they use that information to track your purchases and then the register spits out coupons custome made for you.

The vine is just another way to watch you.

Yes! you got it. But, say, how can they tell who one is, since one only use a screen name. and may be using a PC that is not theirs. The only true info News Vine may have about its users are their E-mail addresses which may still not be their own. So how about that?

I don't think of any viners as big brother. How ever, I am thinking that Big brother has a feed going directly to their computers. That computer compiles, sorts and analyzes all the information and I'm sure they can find out who is sending the e-mails.

If you draw a red flag you might want to watch for a black car and a couple of guy in black suits, wearing sun glasses and an ear piece.

Now how's that for a conspiracy!

OOP's, I just heard a car door slam. I gotta turn the lights off. shhhhhhhhhhhhhh

They said something about a trip to an island with warm weather. I think they said something about a resort named Gitmo.

There must be a swimming pool because they said something about a diving board. Or was that surfboard or maybe water board.

I think it's a bit extreme to assume that the government is spying on you by looking at your store cards and credit cards. If they have an actual reason to, I'm sure they will, but most Americans (and I do mean 99.999% of us) will never be spied on. Those coupons print out for you because the store wants you to come back and spend more of your money there. They aren't packing up boxes of data and shipping it off to the government.

A long time ago, I worked for Radioshack. One day, a customer came in to buy some batteries. I asked for his zip code before getting into the register. I had a manager explain to me once that the reason they ask for your zip code is because it better helps them figure out where to build more stores. But this guy? He wasn't buying it. He went on to explain how the government uses that information to track people, and to track purchases. It doesn't matter if three hundred thousand people live within your zip code... they know you like Duracell batteries, and they know it must be you buying them. He explained this dystopiate Orwellian vision he had, and how one day we'd all have social security chips in our brains, and our currency would be replaced entirely by credit cards issued at birth. He was a proper loon (and please don't think I'm comparing you to him!), but it was a pretty hilarious experience nevertheless.

All said, I really don't think the Big Brother thing is anything we need to worry about. I'm far more worried about corporations spying on me than the government.

I was just trying to point out some possibilities. I realize that the gov't doesn't really spy on most of us.

And yes, the grocery stores use that as a tool to get you back. But is a form of spying.

It is said that the average American is photographed 58 times a day by video cameras.

Our opinions here on the vine could be possibly be used to spy on us.

Our lives are not very private any more.

Regarding the advertisements, it benefits all of us to "click" them. It's a pain, but it's revenue for Newsvine, thus, it continues to give us an outlet for our opinions.

However, I do wonder about the opinions that are "out there." How long can they float about until Newsvine says it's time to have those really old opinions rounded up and thrown into the fire? Kind of like the health-care plan and old people, huh? Oops! I didn't mean to make that comparison, it just shot right out there!!! I'll rope it back in.

      There.....it's back, now.

Once an idea is shared with another -- especially lots of others, it doesn't die but lives on in the change of perception it causes; for good or bad.

Ideas are more dangerous and addictive than any drug and why so many governments go to such lengths to limit, contain, or destroy them.

opinions go to the opinion graveyard where underneath lies an underground government facility that determines weather or not we are safe to be out in the real world or if we will become the next Hitlers of our time. It's not just one government either all countries where people give their opinions on NV their governments are also under less restrictions but still are under the all seeing eye. Americans are the most targeted, so if your in another country your safe, but still being watched.
